The Colorado Rockies (46-50) will officially get the second part of the season under away against the Chicago Cubs (42-51) at home on Friday for a three game series.
The Rockies will have their ace Jorge De La Rosa (9-5, 3.21 ERA) going against former Notre Dame football star Jeff Samardzija (5-9, 4.06 ERA). On Saturday, the Rockies have Juan Nicasio (5-4, 4.89 ERA) go against Carlos Villanueva (2-5, 3.59 ERA). The Rockies will finish up with young phenom Tyler Chatwood (5-3, 2.56 ERA) going against Edwin Jackson (6-10, 5.11 ERA)
The series will be the start of a big 10 game home trip for the Colorado Rockies. With the Rockies just 4.5 games back from the division leaders the Arizona Diamondbacks (50-45), the Rockies will need take all the home games they can to make a serious push down the stretch.
These next 10 games could determine whether the Rockies will become buyers or sellers for the July 31st trade deadline. The Rockies could use a few additional pieces to make a serious push. Ideally, they could use a big bat, relief pitcher and starting pitcher. It is uncertain who the Rockies may be willing to part ways if they do become sellers at the deadline, but don't expect the big names like Michael Cuddyer, Carlos Gonzalez or Troy Tulowitzki to go anywhere.
There isn't a lot of certainty over the next two weeks, but the Rockies would be wise to know they could be playing for their season.
